Solar System

A.C.

The sun together with all the planets and other bodies that revolve around it is called the solar system. The solar system includes the sun, everything that orbits it, and everything that travels around the sun. The solar system includes the eight planets (and their moons), dwarf planets (like Pluto), and billions of asteroids comets, and other tiny frozen objects.   Though, with all of these things most of the system is a frozen, cold wasteland. It is only a tiny part of a big system of stars and other things in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is just one of millions of galaxies that make up the universe.
In the center of the solar system is the sun. It is the biggest thing in the solar system. It is a huge ball of helium and hydrogen gases. It is always changing the hydrogen gases in its core to helium. This gives a big amount of energy. Everything on earth depends on light and warmth from it. The gases that surround it shoot out a stream of small particles called the solar wind. It goes outward through the whole solar system. The solar wind is what causes auroras; or showings of multi-colored lights in the night sky in some parts of the earth. After the sun, the biggest objects in the solar system are the 8 planets. In order from closest to the sun, the planets are mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Almost all of them orbit the sun in paths shaped like circles. Most of the planets have at least one moon.  Scientists used to think Pluto was the 9th planet.  But in the year 2006 they decided that Pluto will now be classified as a dwarf planet.  Thousands of tiny pieces of metal and rock called asteroids also orbit the sun. Almost all asteroids are found in a circle between Jupiter and Mars. Tiny asteroids daily fall to the earth or burn up in the sky as meteors.  Comets are pieces of ice and dirt. Millions of them orbit the sun in very long paths shaped like ovals. Most comets are too tiny or far away to ever be seen by us.  Comets come through parts of the outer solar system, the Kuper Belt cloud. The Kuper Belt cloud lies just beyond Neptune.  The solar system is a very interesting place.
