A mushroom is any of the various, rapidly growing, fleshy fungi, typically having a stalk capped with an umbrella like top; especially a gill or pore fungus. A mushroom is considered a fungi that grows outdoors. Many mushrooms can be cooked and eaten. Some others are poisonous. Mushrooms can be different colors and shapes. The most common mushroom is the button mushroom. They consist of a cap and stalk. They are sometimes called true mushrooms. Some of them look like golf balls. Others look like funnels, bells, stars, a bird’s nest, honeycombs, or like a piece of coral. Mushrooms can be the color red, yellow, lavender, silvery blue, pink, orange, green, brown, white, or black. Most mushrooms can grow underground in tiny threadlike strands. The strands can form a tangled mass called a mycelium. The well known mushroom form is the part of the fungus that grows above the surface. The part of a mushroom that grows above the ground is the fruiting, or reproductive part. This part produces millions of tiny particles called spores. |
