Squirrels mostly live in woodland areas. They have bushy tails, large eyes, four front teeth, cheek pouches, and a coat of short fur. The tail helps the squirrel balance when jumping from tree to tree. The size of their brain is about the size of a walnut. They can weigh up to four pounds. Their life span is about five to seven years old. They mostly eat buds, berries, tree bark, seeds, nuts, and vegetation. They also eat eggs, baby birds, or tree sap. They live in tunnels most of their lives or trees.. They are not an endangered animal. During the winter they hibernate in a burrow. They are the size of a tea cup. Female squirrels typically give birth to eight babies at a time. New born squirrels are born naked (without fur) and are blind. One very interesting thing I found in my research was that squirrels communicate by whistling. Squirrels are very popular all over the world.
Although, squirrels are not endangered, they are other animals prey. Coyotes, weasels, snakes, red fox, raccoons, hawks, falcons, eagles, and owls eat these animals. If you were in the city cats and dogs might eat them. This is where their terrific tree climbing comes in handy. There are over two hundred species of squirrels around the world. The most common squirrel is the tree squirrel and flying squirrel. The biggest/ longest squirrel is the Indian squirrel. It measures up to 3 feet long. The flying squirrel has flaps of skin that spread out wide when ready to fly. They live in nests or tree holes like birds. Their gliding leaps can exceed 150 feet. These squirrels are seen all over the world and are cute creatures.
