The Elephants Of The World

Elephants are an endangered species because of humans. Humans killed them because they wanted their tusks which made elephants on the endangered species list. Elephants are very exciting because their scientific class name is Mammalia, the order is aroboscidea, the family is elephantidae, the genus is loxodonta, and you’ll never guess the species is L.cyclotis. Most people think that elephants live in dry and hot places, but they actually live in rain forests and savannas. Elephants are really cool because they communicate by sending a high-low sound.  Male African elephants can reach the height of 8 feet. A female elephant’s gestation (pregnancy) is more than any other mammal. A female’s pregnancy is 22 months. In Africa and Asia elephants are everywhere. Elephants are gray-brown and have tusks, tiny hairs, and wrinkles. When I found this fact I couldn’t believe it. An elephants can communicate by sending a low-high sound to one another. An adult   elephant can eat up to 300 pounds of food a day. Female elephants can only give birth every 2-4 years. Finding this fact was amazing…an elephant has 100,000 muscles in their trunk! After the baby elephant is born it can weigh 200 pounds and be 3 feet tall. A herd is mostly made of females and their babies. Elephants can live up to 70 years old and you can never tell because they’re always wrinkly.   The head of the herd of elephants is called the matriarch. An elephant’s weight can be 5,000 to 14,000. Elephants  only travel in herds. Elephants have different names, females are called cold cows and males are called bulls. Elephants love water and are always in it because the tusks gain the most heat and need to be cooled.
