Giraffe
 


Giraffes are amazing mammals. Their class is the Mammalia and their order is the Artiodactyl. Giraffes live in the giraffidae family and their genus is giraffa.   The species is G.camelopardalis.
Description Of A Giraffe
Giraffes have a short body and long neck. They have light brown spots and they have short horns. Giraffes have large nostrils and long tongues. A giraffe’s neck weighs about 600 pounds. Giraffes have horns called ossicones.
Giraffe’s Habitat
The places giraffes live in are the African savannahs of Kenya and Tanzania in east Africa.    Giraffes can live in many different areas. They can live in the dry open woods, dry land and also they live in the grasslands. Male giraffes can live in denser woods. Believe it or not giraffes can even live in the savannas.
Giraffes Eat
Giraffes eat leaves, twigs, flowers, and fruit. Giraffes can even eat bark!  Giraffes spend 16-20 hours a day eating.
Facts About Giraffes
Male giraffes can weigh about 3000 pounds and female giraffes can weigh about 1500 pounds. Did you know giraffes have to spread their legs to drink water because they cannot bend down? The male giraffes fight for a female and that is called “necking.” Giraffe’s tongues can be 18 inches 45 centimeters or their tongue can be longer! The male giraffe is called a bull. The giraffe is not an endangered animal right now, but it could become endangered any year or day. Calves can stand shortly after birth. Calves weigh about 150 pounds and are 6 feet tall. They are the tallest animal on land.
